Tunisia: Tunisian wholesale pharmacists launch national indefinite strike Dec. 5

Unionized wholesale pharmacists launched indefinite strike in Tunisia Dec. 5; possible medication supply disruptions and protests.

Informational

Event

Unionized wholesale pharmacists launched an indefinite nationwide strike Dec. 5. The labor action is to denounce the alleged failure of authorities to honor tax exemptions for the year 2022. The union claims the strike will continue until a solution is found to alleviate the financial burden on wholesale pharmacies. Authorities have asked wholesale pharmacists to continue distributing medicine for chronic diseases during the strike, but the union has not yet responded.

The strike could affect the supply of medications, leading to increased demand at hospitals and other medical facilities. Striking pharmacists may also hold demonstrations, particularly outside the headquarters of the Central Pharmacy in Tunis. Localized traffic disruptions are possible near any protests that may occur.

Context

Unionized wholesale pharmacists initially postponed their first national strike on Nov. 15 as Tunisian authorities attempted to find a compromise.

Advice

Ensure sufficient supplies of essential medications are on hand. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution; exercise caution around government buildings, prominent public parks and squares, and other popular rally sites. Allow additional time for travel near likely gathering locations.
