UK: Adverse weather forecast across parts of England and Scotland through at least Dec. 16

Severe weather forecast across parts of England and Scotland, UK, through Dec. 16. Disruptions to air travel and ground transport likely.

Warning

Event

Snow, ice, and freezing fog weather conditions are forecast across parts of the UK through at least Dec. 16. The UK Met Office has issued a yellow warning for multiple areas across the UK for snow, ice, and fog conditions. The wintery conditions have prompted Heathrow Airport (LHR) to cancel dozens of flights as of Dec. 11. The UK Health Security Agency has issued a level three cold weather alert, which covers England, through at least Dec. 16.

Hazardous Conditions
Snow accumulations are likely across the affected areas, especially at higher elevations. Lesser accumulations are possible where sleet and freezing rain mix with the snow, and precipitation are less intense. In addition to the heavy snow, strong wind gusts will likely lead to periods of blowing and drifting snow in some areas. Blizzard conditions are possible. Sporadic power outages could occur throughout the affected areas.

Transport
The winter weather will likely cause ground and air transport disruptions over the coming days. Traffic and commercial trucking delays are possible along regional highways. Dangerous and challenging driving conditions are also likely on secondary and rural roads in the affected states as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes. Authorities could close stretches of highways if driving conditions become too hazardous. Flight delays and cancellations are likely due to ground stops and deicing operations at regional airports.

Advice

Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where adverse weather conditions have been forecast. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
