Portugal: Union calls for protest in Faro Dec. 17

The General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (Confederacao Geral dos Trabalhadores Portugueses, CGTP) is planning to hold a protest at the municipal market in Faro from 10:00 Dec. 17. Participants will then march to Rue de Santo Antonio. Supporters are calling for a 10 percent wage increase and setting the national minimum wage at 850 euros. Hundreds of people may participate in the demonstration.

Although the gathering will probably remain largely peaceful, authorities will almost certainly deploy increased numbers of police to monitor the events. Localized traffic disruptions are likely.
