Maldives: Additional protests over sentencing of former President Abdulla Yameen possible in Male as of Dec. 27

Activists and supporters of former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen and his Progressive Party of Maldives may hold additional rallies in Male as of Dec. 27. Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison on money laundering charges Dec. 25. His party claims the investigation and trial were unfair and a political vendetta. Dozens of people protested outside the presiding judge's house in Male Dec. 26, resulting in tight security and arrests.

Street marches and rallies are possible in the vicinity of the Maafushi prison housing Yameen, the Criminal Court building, offices and residences of government leaders such as President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, as well as popular protest venues like political party offices, public squares, and the Artificial Beach. Localized transport disruptions are probable near well-attended gatherings; security checkpoints are possible near sensitive buildings. Clashes are possible if activists breach security cordons, counter-protests are organized by rival parties, or police forcibly disperse crowds. Security forces are likely to quell any violent unrest quickly.
