Iraq: Protesters block main roads in Diyala Governorate, Jan. 2

Protesters blocked several main roads in Diyala Governorate with burning tires and stopped cars, Jan. 2, to demand the appointment of security leaders exclusively from the governorate to represent them. Reports indicate that the affected roads connecting Baqubah to Kanaqin, Muqdadiya, and Kanan, as well as the main road between Baghdad and Kirkuk.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely along the affected roads in Diyala Governorate throughout Jan. 2. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse.
