A magnitude-5.2 earthquake occurred in the Solomon Sea, near New Ireland Province at around 16:24 PGT Jan. 9. The epicenter was about 156 km (97 miles) southeast of Kokopo. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 36 km (22 miles), and light shaking may have been felt across southeastern New Ireland, East New Britain, and western Bougainville provinces. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties because of the earthquake; significant damage is unlikely.
