Warning

Event

The Free Destourian Party has called for a protest march from the Cantonal Court of Carthage to the Presidential Palace in Carthage, Tunis Governorate, Jan. 14. Activists will gather outside the Cantonal Court of Carthage at 10:00 before marching to the Presidential Palace. The purpose of the action is to demand President Kais Saied's resignation and protest his policies. Thousands of individuals will likely attend the event.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely in the affected areas through late Jan. 14. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.

Context

Since the suspension of the Tunisian Parliament on July 2021, Saied has been consolidating his hold on Tunisian institutions. Saied has modified the constitution to create a presidential system, reducing the power of the Parliament and other institutions. The move has angered most opposition parties, who boycotted the legislative elections on Dec. 17.

Advice

Avoid the protest march due to the potential for clashes. Heed the advice of security personnel. Allow additional time if traveling through the affected areas Jan. 14.
