Contractual healthcare workers staging strike and protests in Jharkhand State as of Jan. 17. Disruptions reported.

Warning

Event

Contractual healthcare workers are staging an indefinite work stoppage and related demonstrations in Jharkhand State as of Jan. 17 to demand the regularization of their employment status. On Jan. 16, strike participants staged a protest march from Morhabadi ground toward the Raj Bhavan government building before police installed barricades to disperse the gatherers. Various tribal organizations opposed to the contractual health workers' demands also organized a march on Jan. 16. Both incidents of civil unrest prompted localized transport disruptions in Ranchi. As of Jan. 17, reports indicate the labor action has resulted in widespread medical disruptions across the state; over 10,000 workers are reportedly participating in the work stoppage.

Further related demonstrations are likely over the coming days, especially near city- and state-level government buildings, public squares, and along major thoroughfares. Activists may stage protest marches, sit-in demonstrations, and block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Larger gatherings will likely draw thousands of participants. Security personnel will almost certainly monitor any protests, particularly near government buildings, and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive crowds. Isolated clashes between protesters and police, as well as among various opposing groups, cannot be ruled out. Localized business disruptions may occur in the event of prolonged industrial action and/or demonstrations.

Advice

Confirm medical reservations in advance. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Allow additional travel time near protests. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
