Informational

Event

Activists from the Malaysian Islamic Party plan to protest in Kuala Lumpur Jan. 27 to denounce the burning of the Quran by a far-right activist from Denmark, who received authorization from Swedish police to protest outside Turkey's Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. Organizers have called for protesters to gather at Tabung Haji Mosque at 08:30 before marching to the Embassy of Sweden. Another protest march is set to take place from Asy-Syakirin Mosque KLCC to the Embassy of Sweden from 14:00 after Friday prayers. Dozens to hundreds of people could join the gathering. The Malaysian police have not given approval for the protests and could take action against attendees.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security at the protest sites and nearby areas as a precaution. Localized traffic and business disruptions are possible. Security forces may arrest participants if they consider any demonstration to be disruptive or if any rally lacks a public gathering permit. While the gathering will most likely pass off peacefully, clashes between police and demonstrators cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the protest sites Jan. 27 due to increased security measures and possible clashes. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a non-government building. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
