Afghanistan: Nationwide protests likely as of Jan. 28

Further protests denouncing the recent burning of Qurans are likely in urban centers in the coming days as of Jan. 28. Protests occurred in multiple urban centers in recent days, including a large-scale protest in Kabul Jan. 27 in response to a far-right activist burning Qurans in Sweden and Denmark Jan. 21 and 27 respectively. The largest gatherings are likely in major cities, such as Jalalabad, Herat, Kabul, Kandahar, Lashkar-Gah, and Mazar-e-Sharif. Likely protest venues include mosques, government buildings, and major roadways. Protests could occur at any time, but are most likely after Friday prayers. Hundreds to thousands of people may attend protests.

Given the nature of the protests, anti-Western sentiment is almost certainly elevated, and any violence that occurs could be directed toward Western nationals.
