Israel, PT: Authorities to deploy heightened security presence in Jerusalem and West Bank following shooting attacks Jan. 27-28 /update 2
Israeli authorities likely to maintain increased security in Jerusalem and West Bank through mid-February after shooting attacks Jan. 27-28.
Event
Israeli authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security presence in Jerusalem, including East Jerusalem, and the West Bank through at least mid-February following shooting attacks in the Neve Yaakov neighborhood of East Jerusalem Jan. 27 and the Silwan area of the city Jan. 28. In Neve Yaakov, a gunman opened fire outside a synagogue, killing seven people and wounding at least three others before Israeli police killed him. The shooting in Silwan wounded two people; a passerby reportedly shot and wounded the assailant. No militant group immediately claimed responsibility for either of the shootings. Further similar attacks cannot be ruled out over the coming days. Palestinian authorities have blamed the Israeli government for the recent escalation of tensions.
In response to the attacks, Israeli authorities have "permanently" positioned counterterrorism-unit officers in Jerusalem to respond to "exceptional events whenever necessary." Additionally, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has reportedly decided to deploy additional battalions to the West Bank. Israeli authorities may also deploy a heightened security presence in other locations within the country over the short term.
Israeli forces' heightened security measures may include the establishment of additional checkpoints and movement restrictions, among other protocols. Transport and business disruptions are likely in areas subject to such measures. Palestinian activists may stage demonstrations to denounce the imposition of increased security measures; clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces cannot be ruled out.
Context
Authorities in Israel have bolstered security nationwide in the aftermath of several terror attacks since the early spring of 2022. The series of attacks across the country, including in Be'er Sheva, Hadera, Bnei Brak, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv, prompted authorities to launch Operation Break the Wave in late March 2022. The operation focuses on the West Bank and aims to stem the wave of terror attacks that have killed nearly 40 people and wounded dozens of others. As part of Operation Break the Wave, the IDF has conducted regular raids against suspected Palestinian militant cells in Jenin and Nablus in recent weeks. Israeli forces have reportedly arrested more than 2,500 Palestinians and killed over 200 others since the operation began.
Advice
Exercise caution while operating in Israel and the West Bank. Seek updated information on security conditions and possible movement restrictions in East Jerusalem and the West Bank before traveling. Heed the advice of local authorities. Avoid loitering near security checkpoints and main entrances to hotels, restaurants, or government buildings. Do not attempt to bypass security checkpoints without authorities' permission.
