Reunion: Labor unions call for islandwide strike Feb. 7 and related demonstrations Feb. 7 and 11

Labor unions call for islandwide strike Feb. 7 and related protests in Saint-Denis and Saint-Pierre Feb. 7 and 11.

Informational

Event

Major labor unions have called for an islandwide strike Feb. 7 and related protests in Saint-Denis and Saint-Pierre Feb. 7 and 11 to denounce recently proposed pension reforms that would raise the retirement age. Organizers have announced the following protest details.

Feb. 7:

  • Saint-Denis: Participants will gather from 09:00 at the Petit Marche and march towards the Prefecture.

  • Saint-Pierre: Participants will gather from 09:00 at the Front de Mer and march towards the Sub-Prefecture and town hall.

Feb. 11:

  • Saint-Denis: Participants will gather from 09:00 at the Jardin de l’Etat and march towards the Prefecture.

  • A demonstration will likely take in Saint-Pierre Feb. 11; organizers have yet to release additional details.

It is unclear how many participants the events may draw nor the level of adherence to the work stoppage. The strike could cause disruptions to transport and other services. Heightened security and localized road disruptions are likely along the march routes. Most actions will probably remain largely peaceful, though isolated clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out.

Context

A coalition of major labor unions, opposition political parties, and activist groups are continuing a campaign of strikes and associated protests across France and its overseas territories as of Feb. 6, with nationwide strikes and protests planned Feb. 7 and 11. Further action against the pension reform will likely occur in the coming weeks unless the government abandons the proposed legislation.

Advice

As a precaution, reconfirm business appointments and travel arrangements. Avoid all demonstrations. Heed the instructions of local authorities; leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
