North Korea: Country to commemorate founding of armed forces Feb. 8

North Korea to commemorate founding anniversary of armed forces Feb. 8. Tight security, transport disruptions likely in Pyongyang.

Warning

Event

North Korea will mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of its armed forces Feb. 8. The largest celebrations will likely occur in the capital Pyongyang in the evening. Thousands of people will likely attend official performances and a military procession at Kim Ill-Sung Square.

Extremely tight security is likely in the capital in the lead-up to the event; police and military personnel could conduct increased patrols. Officials could restrict travel into the city; during previous major celebrations, the government banned all vehicles registered in other provinces from entering the capital. Security checkpoints are possible on arterial roads into the city. The celebrations will probably cause widespread traffic disruptions in the capital, particularly around Kim Ill-Sung Square. Authorities will also likely block access to nearby metro stations, possibly before and after the parade.

Advice

Do not engage in politically sensitive conversations. Carry proper identification at all times and heed the instructions of authorities. If operating in Pyongyang, confirm travel plans, and allow additional time to reach destinations, especially Feb. 8.
