Lebanon: Banks temporarily suspend ongoing, open-ended nationwide strike as of Feb. 24

Lebanese banks suspend ongoing, open-ended nationwide strike for one week, effective as of Feb. 24. Lingering business disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

The Association of Lebanese Banks announced Feb. 24 the temporary suspension of its ongoing, open-ended strike for one week. The decision has come at the request of caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati. The labor action, which began on Feb. 7, was in response to a Lebanon Court of Cassation ruling that forced Fransabank to pay out two of its depositors' savings in cash.

Lingering disruptions to banking services are almost certain despite the suspension of the strike. Additional work stoppages by banks remain likely after the suspension period ends. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible near any associated demonstrations that may materialize. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, mainly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse.

Advice

Plan for any lingering banking service disruptions. Avoid any possible protests due to the potential for clashes. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings.
