India: Protests denouncing the government's plan to increase gas prices possible nationwide into mid-March

Protests against government's plan to increase gas prices possible across India into mid-March. Increased security likely.

Warning

Event

Various opposition political groups, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and Indian National Congress (INC), will likely continue their recently launched campaign of protests across India into at least mid-March. The purpose of the action is to condemn the government's plan to increase gas prices. On March 2, the INC held demonstrations in several states, including Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh; clashes were reported near the State Legislative Assembly building in Lucknow. Other parties held similar gatherings in Telangana and other states. On March 3, BRS supporters plan to rally at all assembly constituencies across Telangana State.

Although no other groups have as yet announced specific plans for related demonstrations, such protests could occur with little-to-no warning. Typical gathering sites include government buildings, prominent squares in city centers, and main thoroughfares.

Increased security is likely near any sites where demonstrations materialize. Clashes between police and protesters, as well as among supporters of rival political camps, are possible. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Allow additional travel time near protests. Plan accordingly for potential localized business disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
