Pakistan: Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf calls for protest outside judicial courts complex in Islamabad from 10:00 March 18
Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf plans protest in Islamabad, Pakistan, from 10:00 March 18. Increased security likely; clashes possible.
Event
Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) party supporters plan to protest outside the Judicial Courts Complex in Islamabad's Sector G-11 from 10:00 March 18 due to a court hearing for former Prime Minister Imran Khan. PTI party supporters intend to escort Khan in a convoy from Zaman Park in Lahore to the Judicial Courts Complex in Islamabad along the M2 motorway from 07:30. Officials have issued Section 144 orders in Islamabad ahead of Khan's court appearance, prohibiting unauthorized public gatherings of more than five people and the possession of arms, among other rules. Thousands of people could participate in the demonstration.
Authorities will almost certainly increase security near the Judicial Courts Complex and may attempt to disperse disruptive gatherings forcibly. Officials may also conduct mass arrests if activists defy orders to disperse. Increased security deployment, security cordons, personnel and vehicle checks, and roadblocks preventing entry to Islamabad are possible. Protesters may march along or block major roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Traffic disruptions are also possible along the M2 motorway as PTI supporters escort Khan from Lahore to Islamabad. Clashes, arson, and vandalism may occur. Localized business disruptions are possible in case of violence. Police and protester roadblocks, as well as internet restrictions, could impact the vicinity of the Judicial Complex.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations due to the increased potential for violence. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter at a secure nongovernmental building. Allow additional time near sites where gatherings materialize. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
