Pakistan: Increased security, gathering ban active in Peshawar and other areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province through March 22

Authorities heighten security in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan, through March 22, amid terror risk.

Warning

Event

Authorities have heightened security in multiple areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province through at least March 22, following fatal attacks on police officers in Lakki Marwat and Tank districts March 13. Officials are imposing Section 144 in Peshawar, as well as Abbottabad, Bannu, Chitral, Dir Lower, Dir Upper, Kirk, Kohat, Kurram, Lakki Marwat, Malakand, Mardan, and Swat districts from March 18; extensions are possible. Section 144 rules prohibit unauthorized public gatherings of over five people and the carrying of arms, among others.

Barricades and checkpoints near potential terror targets like government buildings, military installations, religious sites, transport hubs, and crowded public places are probable, especially in Peshawar. Security personnel may also conduct vehicle, personnel, and building checks. Counter-terror operations and related arrests are possible in the coming days; protests and armed clashes cannot be ruled out during such events. Police and/or protest activity may cause localized transport disruptions. Business disruptions are possible if significant violence occurs.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. Carry proper personal identification documents and remain non-confrontational when approached by security personnel. Confirm road status and transport reservations beforehand; allow additional travel time to reach sensitive sites including the Bacha Khan International Airport (PEW). Heed all traffic and security advisories.
