Ecuador: Authorities declare 01:00-05:00 curfew in western provinces effective April 2

Authorities in Ecuador declare 01:00-05:00 curfew in western provinces effective April 2. Increased security likely.

Warning

Event

Authorities in Ecuador have declared a state of emergency in Guayaquil, along with Duran and Samborondon districts in Guayas Province, as well as in Santa Elena and Los Rios provinces effective April 2. Officials have declared a daily 01:00-05:00 curfew. The measure provides security forces with greater flexibility in combating organized crime and will last until at least May 31. President Guillermo Lasso stated that the measure is due to an increase in criminal activity in the areas.

Authorities may also establish security checkpoints. Law enforcement agencies may increase their patrols and/or execute warrantless searches on vehicles, persons, or premises. Localized business and transport disruptions are likely for the duration of the state of exception.

Advice

Avoid areas where security operations are ongoing. Follow the instructions of security personnel; remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement officers. Ensure travel documents are accessible at all times. Maintain contact with diplomatic missions.
