Afghanistan: The United Nations limits local employee attendance and non-critical operations nationwide through May 5

United Nations suspends on-site work for most local employees in Afghanistan through at least May 5. Aid disruptions, protests possible.

Informational

Event

The United Nations has suspended on-site work for non-critical local employees in Afghanistan through May 5 as it reviews its presence in the country. The move is to protest the Taliban administration's recent ban on local females working in national and international non-governmental organizations. Although foreign employees and crucial aid services will remain unaffected, additional disruptions to UN services and other aid organizations are possible in the coming weeks.

Residents may protest over any interruptions to aid delivery and/or Taliban regulations. Dozens of people may gather at each event, mainly outside the UN office in Kabul. Local UN workers may also demonstrate if further operational limits or permanent closure of the UN office causes job losses. Security personnel typically use force including live ammunition to quickly quell demonstrations.

Advice

Plan for business disruptions if affected by new workforce regulations. Abide by local laws. Avoid protests due to possible violence. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
