Russia: 7.5-magnitude earthquake hits southeast of Kuril Islands March 25

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 7.5-magnitude earthquake approximately 219 km (136 mi) south-southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk in the Kuril Island on Wednesday, March 25. According to initial readings, the quake struck at around 13:50 (local time) at a depth of 57 km (35 mi). No tsunami warning was immediately issued, however the US Tsunami Warning Center warned that the earthquake has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami in the region.
Aftershocks are possible over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.
In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
