On Thursday, April 16, the Islamic State (IS) militant group claimed responsibility for the April 15 arson attack in the town of Mahibadhoo (Southern Ari Atoll). The attack, the group's first-ever in the country, destroyed at least five boats that belonged to the Maldivian government, including a sea ambulance and police boat. A police investigation is ongoing as of Thursday.

Further attacks are possible over the near term.
