Nationwide power outages reported December 12 amid nationwide strike; additional electricity cuts possible over the coming days

As of Thursday, December 12, power cuts are being reported nationwide, due to an ongoing strike by the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) which began on Wednesday, December 11. The most affected areas by power supply disruptions include Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi states. The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IE) has warned that disruption of services is also likely in Lagos. It remains unclear when normal services will resume as negotiations between the NUEE and the government are ongoing.

Associated transportation and business disruptions are likely in the coming hours and days.

Individuals in Nigeria are advised to monitor the situation, keep battery-operated devices fully charged whenever possible and to be cautious when driving or crossing streets if traffic signals are not functioning.
