Islamic State militant group claims responsibility for blast at Al Arish-Al Qantara pipeline (North Sinai governorate) on November 19; heightened security expected

The Islamic State (IS) militant group has claimed responsibility for an explosion at the Al Arish-Al Qantara natural gas pipeline in North Sinai governorate on Thursday, November 19. The blast reportedly occurred in the vicinity of Bir al-Abd. Emergency services have responded to the scene and extinguished the fire with authorities clarifying that gas supplies had not been affected. The scale of the damage is currently being ascertained and no injuries or fatalities have been reported. Authorities have not commented on IS' claim of responsibility.

A heightened security presence is anticipated in the vicinity of the incident, along with disruptions to overland travel. Further attacks against the pipeline are possible.

Those in Egypt are advised to monitor the situation, refrain from traveling to North Sinai province, report suspicious behavior and objects to the authorities, remain vigilant when visiting areas vulnerable to terrorist attacks (e.g. tourist sites, churches, international and government buildings, public transportation hubs, etc.), and anticipate similar security operations over the near term.
