Case Study — People Risk 2021
University Student Faculty Evacuation Nicaragua
On April 18, 2018, Nicaragua President Daniel Ortega announced several reforms to the payroll and social security program including a reduction in pension payments and an increase in payroll taxes. The announcement sparked fighting among protesters, security forces, and government supporters. Tensions escalated over the next several days and, on April 23, multiple foreign governments issued travel advisories for Nicaragua due to ongoing violent protests. Many of the protests occurred on university campuses, creating a heightened security risk for any students studying in the country.
