Italy: Bridge collapses in Sardinia following heavy rain October 10

Bridge collapses in Sardinia due to heavy rain on October 10; orange/red weather alerts issued in Italy on October 11

A section of a bridge collapsed near Cagliari in Sardinia on Wednesday, October 10, due to heavy rainfall. No casualties were reported, as the bridge had been closed to traffic earlier in the day.

On a related note, red and orange weather alerts were issued for the regions of Liguria, Piedmont, Emilia e Romagna, Tuscany, and Sardinia on Thursday, October 11. Thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected in these areas. Associated transportation disruptions and power outages are possible due to potential flooding and infrastructural damage.

There are concerns regarding maintenance of road infrastructure in Italy, notably following the collapse of the Morandi bridge in Genoa on August 14, which left 43 dead.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of weather alerts, confirm travel reservations, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
