Activists in Namibe call for further anti-government demonstrations on November 16; avoid protests as a precaution

Activists in Namibe have called for further anti-government protests on Monday, November 16, following the arrest of several demonstrators on Wednesday, November 11. Reports indicate that rallies took place in the areas of Largo do Espírito Santo and Facada amid a heightened security presence, and arrests were subsequently made. 

Related protests occurred in the capital LuandaHuambo, and Malanje on Wednesday. In Luanda, police utilized tear gas to disperse anti-government demonstrators in the Largo da Independência area. Several people were reportedly injured amid the protests, and authorities made several arrests. Wednesday's rallies coincided with the 45th anniversary of the independence of Angola from Portugal in 1975.

Further anti-government protests are to be anticipated across Angola over the coming days. A heightened security presence and associated disruptions should be anticipated in the vicinity of protest sites. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible.

Context

Anti-government demonstrations on October 24 denouncing the alleged high cost of living resulted in clashes between security forces and protesters, with dozens arrested. The Provincial Court of Luanda sentenced 71 activists arrested on October 24 on charges of unrest and damage to property, among other things, who face fines. Twenty-one detainees were released without charge on Sunday. Several demonstrations were held outside of the Provincial Court of Luanda from October 25 and throughout the sentencing of those detained.
