At least 10 people wounded in clashes on Lesbos island February 27; additional demonstrations possible over the coming days



Residents of Lesbos opposed to the construction of a new closed migrant detention center clashed with security forces for a second consecutive day on Thursday, February 27. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at the site of the new facility on Thursday, reportedly pelting police with stones. Security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowds, resulting in 10 casualties.

Additional demonstrations are possible on Lesbos over the coming days. A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions should be expected in the vicinity of all gatherings. Further clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
