Greece: Unionized workers to conduct nationwide strike May 1
Unionized workers to strike across Greece from 00:01-23:59 May 1; disruptions certain. Associated protests likely in other urban areas.
Unionized workers affiliated with several unions, including The Civil Servants' Confederation (ADEDY) and the Greek General Confederation of Labor (GSEE), plan to strike across Greece from 00:01-23:59 on May 1 in observance of May Day. Union leaders have called on workers from all sectors, including Panhellenic Seamen's Federation (PNO) members, the primary union for maritime workers, to participate in the work stoppage. ADEDY and GSEE have also called for striking workers and supporters to protest at Klafthmonos Square in Athens from 11:00.
Transport disruptions, maritime service, and business disruptions are likely nationwide on May 1 and may continue into the morning hours of May 2. Large crowds are likely at the planned Athens protest. Additional protests are likely in urban centers across Greece; heightened security is probable near all demonstrations. Confrontations, potentially escalating to clashes, between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Reconfirm all travel rail, maritime, and air travel plans in advance. Be prepared for general business and service disruptions. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
