Greece: Rail workers to conduct nationwide work stoppage Dec. 20

Unionized rail workers employed by Hellenic Train plan to conduct a nationwide strike 12:00-15:00 Dec. 20. The purpose of the work stoppage is to demand improved working conditions and increased staffing. Strike organizers have also announced a protest at the Hellenic Train headquarters at the corner of Andrea Siggrou Avenue and Petmeza in Athens; while they did not immediately indicate a planned start and end time, it is likely that the demonstration will coincide with the strike period. It was not immediately clear how many people would participate in the protest.

Hellenic Train's passenger and freight services will likely experience disruptions during the strike period that may linger into the evening. In addition to the gathering at the Hellenic Train headquarters, striking workers may protest at rail hubs or Hellenic Train facilities across the country. Police will likely deploy to facilitate all demonstrations that materialize. The presence of police and protesters will likely disrupt vehicular transport near the Hellenic Train headquarters and any other protest sites. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
