Prachanda faction of NCP calls for protest marches in Kathmandu, Nepal, Jan. 22. Increased security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Members of the Prachanda-led faction of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) plan to hold protest marches in multiple areas of Kathmandu Jan. 22. Organizers have called the demonstrations to condemn the recent dissolution of Parliament. Protesters plan to gather at multiple locations, including Balmiki College, Dilli Bazaar, Kupandol, Lanchaur, Maitighar, Shanti Batika, Trichandra College, and Tripureshwor, before marching to Ratna Park. Attendees plan to rally at Ratna Park from around 1100 before marching through nearby areas. Participation in the demonstrations will likely be in the hundreds to low thousands.

Security forces will likely deploy to intended protest locations as a precaution Jan. 22. Ground transport disruptions are likely near rally venues and along intended march routes. Clashes between police and activists could occur; authorities may try to break up rallies to enforce coronavirus disease (COVID-19) gathering restrictions. Police have previously forcibly dispersed anti-governmental protests with water cannons and arrested protesters; similar actions are possible during the Jan. 22 protests. Business disruptions are also possible, especially if violence occurs.

Context

Prime Minister Oli, who is facing pressure to resign from warring factions within the ruling NCP), as well as from opposition parties and civil groups, obtained presidential assent to dissolve Parliament Dec. 20. Oli's decision came hours after several lawmakers filed a no-confidence motion against his government; the move is consequently facing legal challenges and public protest for inadequate grounds. Political protests will likely continue in the medium term, and could result in sporadic and localized violence.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out nearby, take shelter in a secure, non-governmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Monitor trusted local news sources, as demonstrators may not announce protests in advance. Allow additional travel time near demonstrations. Confirm business appointments and transport reservations in advance.
