Protests are possible as opposition leader and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia appears in court in Dhaka May 22-23

Warning

Event

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who faces various criminal charges, is scheduled to appear before the high court in the capital Dhaka on Monday, May 22. Zia is also the current chairperson of the county's primary opposition group Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). On May 23, a separate corruption case against Zia will be held at Special Judge's Court-5. Localized protests by BNP supporters and related transportation delays are possible.

Context

Zia is facing multiple criminal charges, including five corruption charges and 15 charges of masterminding violence during anti-government protests held since 2014. Zia has often said political vendettas motivate the cases against her and her sons under the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. If Zia is found guilty, she could be barred from participating in the general elections slated for 2019.

Zia made court appearances in January 2017, at which hundreds of party supporters and leaders gathered while riot police provided a heavy security presence.

Advice

Individuals present in Dhaka are advised to monitor the situation, exercise caution, and avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings due to the possibility of violence. Follow all instructions issued by the local authorities.
