Bangladesh: Power cuts in Dhaka region

Power cuts in Dhaka to continue through at least Saturday, May 27, due to heatwave

Warning

Event

Ongoing rolling power cuts in the capital city of Dhaka are expected to continue through at least Saturday, May 27, before the situation improves. At least ten power plants have stopped producing electricity due to technical breakdowns amid increased demand provoked by an ongoing heatwave.

Some areas in Dhaka are experiencing up to three or four power cuts a day, while districts in more remote areas have no power at all.

There will be a growing demand for electricity during Ramadan (May 26-27 to June 25) and as such further blackouts are to be anticipated during this period.

Advice

Individuals in the Dhaka region are advised to be prepared for power cuts (e.g. keep phones charged) and to limit the use of appliances during heatwaves to avoid putting strain on electricity infrastructure. Be cautious when driving or crossing streets as traffic signals may not be functioning.
