Caribbean: Increased underwater volcanic activity

Event

A “yellow” alert - the third highest on a four-tier scale - has been issued due to increased activity at the underground Kick ‘em Jenny volcano, located approximately 8 km (5 mi) north of Grenada. Signs of seismic activity have been observed since the evening of April 29; as of Tuesday, May 2, more than 40 low-magnitude volcanic earthquakes have been recorded, raising fears of a larger eruption. Such an eruption could potentially result in a tsunami that could affect a number of Caribbean islands and Caribbean-adjacent countries, including Grenada as well as Venezuela, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago. A 1.5-km (0.93-mi) maritime exclusion zones has been established around the volcano.

Context

Kick ‘em Jenny erupts on average every 11 years but the last eruption dates back to 2001. The volcano’s largest eruption, in 1939, resulted in waves 2 m (6.5 ft) high that struck nearby islands.

Individuals present in the above countries are advised to keep abreast of the situation via local media outlets and the national authorities and to adhere to any orders issued by local officials in the event of a major eruption. Be prepared to evacuate and be aware of local evacuation routes.
