Italy: Aviation sector strikes on May 28

Air traffic controllers and Alitalia personnel on strike May 28; confirm flight reservations

Warning

Event

Air traffic controllers have called for a nationwide strike to take place on Sunday, May 28, from 13:00 to 17:00 (local time). On the same day, a strike by pilots and cabin crew at Alitalia will take place from 10:00 to 18:00.

These strikes will likely result in significant flight disruptions across Italy both during and following the strike periods. Flight delays and cancelations are to be anticipated.

Context

Alitalia is currently under governmental guardianship following the refusal by employees to accept a proposed restructuring plan.

Transportation-related strikes are common in Italy and can be highly disruptive. However, in accordance with Italian law, minimum levels of services must be guaranteed during all strikes.

Advice

Travelers are advised to confirm the status their flights prior to departure to the airport and to contact their airlines for more information.
