Two planned demonstrations in Rome May 6; potential traffic disruptions

On Saturday, May 6, two separate demonstrations are planned to take place in Rome. The first demonstration is in support of employees of Rome’s sanitation service provider, AMA, and is expected to involve about 2,000 people and will take place from 09:00 to 13:00 (local time). The demonstration will start at Piazza dell’Esquilino and end at Piazza Madonna di Loreto using the following route:  Piazza dell’Esquilino, via Cavour, Largo Corrado Ricci, via dei Fori Imperiali, Piazza Madonna di Loreto (close to Piazza Venezia).

The second demonstration is in opposition to government housing and labor policy. It is expected to involve about 3,000 people and will take place from 15:00 to 20:00 (local time). The demonstration will start at PiazzaVittorio and end at Piazza Madonna di Loreto using the following route:  Piazza Vittorio, via dello Statuto, via Merulana, via Liberiana, Piazza dell’Esquilino, via Cavour, Largo Corrado Ricci, via dei Fori Imperiali, Piazza Madonna di Loreto (close to Piazza Venezia).

Italian police will be on site at both demonstrations and do not expect the protests to turn violent. Traffic disruptions in the vicinity of the demonstrations are possible.

Context

The AMA is currently under investigation for corruption charges. Rome has long struggled with waste management, with trash often collecting on the streets. The newly elected mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, has promised to overhaul the AMA.

Rome is commonly the site of political demonstrations and protests from groups across the political spectrum.
