Italy: Unionized port workers striking, demonstrating at the Port of Genoa through at least 06:00 Dec. 19 following fatal accident

Unionized port workers striking, protesting at Port of Genoa, Italy, through at least 06:00 Dec. 19. Port and traffic disruptions ongoing.

Warning

Port workers affiliated with the Filt-Cgil, Fit Cisl, and Uiltrasporti unions are striking and protesting at the Port of Genoa until at least 06:00 Dec. 19. Port workers are blocking port entrances, which has caused significant traffic disruptions on major roads close to the port, including the A7, A10, and A12. The 24-hour strike was an immediate response to a fatal accident that occurred at the Port of Genoa's PRA Terminal in the early morning of Dec. 18, in which one worker was killed. Unions are demanding improved safety standards for port workers.

The strike will likely affect passenger and cargo maritime transport through the Port of Genoa until it ends at 06:00 on Dec. 19. Due to ongoing demonstrations, road traffic disruptions will likely continue through at least the late evening of Dec. 18, which may lead to business disruptions in areas surrounding the port. Lingering disruptions are possible in the hours following the end of the strike.

Reconfirm maritime shipments. Consider rescheduling or rerouting time-sensitive freights until services normalize. Exercise caution near any demonstrations at the port gates. Allocate additional time for road travel in Genoa to account for increased congestion. Heed the directives of authorities.
