Liberia: Mystery illness identified as meningitis /update 1

Health officials reported on Wednesday, May 10, that the unidentified illness that reportedly killed 13 people over the previous two weeks has been determined to be meningitis C. The illness, which was first reported in Sinoe county (southeastern Liberia), has reportedly spread to Monrovia and Grand Bassa (center-west). A total of 31 cases have been reported in these three provinces.

Context

This is the first time cases of meningitis have been reported in Liberia.

Symptoms of meningitis C, a contagious bacterial disease, include fever, headache, a stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to light. The disease is treatable with antibiotics. However, if left untreated, it is fatal in approximately 50 percent of cases. A vaccine is available.

Advice

Individuals in Liberia are advised to take the necessary measures to protect themselves from the disease (wash hands and disinfect all surfaces frequently), avoid all contact with infected individuals, and make sure appropriate immunizations are up to date before traveling to the country. Individuals who develop symptoms of the disease should seek immediate medical attention.
