Libya: Security forces seize two oil tankers off the coast of Tripoli April 29

General Ayoub Qassem, a spokesman for the Libyan naval forces, reported that two oil tankers suspected of smuggling oil from Libya were seized off the coast to the west of Tripoli on Saturday, April 29. Libyan forces captured the ships after engaging in a gun battle with the ships’ crew for several hours near the Sidi Said area. Qassem did not report any casualties among Libyan forces or the crew.

Context

Oil is a critical source of income in Libya and the country has the largest reserves in Africa. The United Nations-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) has been struggling to maintain control in Tripoli and protect oil resources since it was formed over a year ago. Oil infrastructure is often the target of fighting between rival groups within the country.
