Warning

Event

Tensions are rising between demonstrators and the government in Al-Hocemia. On Friday, May 26, the government said that Nasser Zefzafi, the leader of the anti-government protests, had been arrested after insulting an imam in a mosque. However, anonymous sources claiming to be closely related to Zefzafi said that he escaped from the authorities. Media sources said that the reports of his arrest caused violent clashes in the city. Internet access in the region has also reportedly been cut off by the authorities, although this information has not been confirmed. Additional violence between the demonstrators and security forces may occur in the coming days.

Context

According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Zefzafi was arrested after interrupting an imam during Friday prayers. This current wave protests started on May 18, when thousands of anti-government protesters took to the streets of the northern city of Al-Hoceima to denounce injustice and corruption.

Protests, which sometimes turn violent, are relatively common in Al-Hoceima. The city, known to be a symbol of anti-colonial resistance, is suffering from difficult economic conditions. In October 2016, violent protests broke out after a fishmonger was killed while trying to prevent his wares from being confiscated by police.

Advice

Individuals in Al-Hoceima are advised to avoid any form of public demonstration or public gathering and to keep abreast of the general climate.
