Netherlands: Soccer viewing event in Amsterdam May 24-25

Public viewing of Amsterdam Ajax soccer team in Amsterdam May 24-25 for Europa League Final; extra security and possible traffic disruptions

Informational

Event

On Wednesday, May 24, there will be a public viewing of the Europa League Final, in which Amsterdam's Ajax soccer team is playing Manchester United. There will be several large screens set up in Amsterdam's Musemplein, which will open at 18:00 (local time) and close at 11:45. Local officials estimate that tens of thousands of fans will attend, with several streets around the Musemplein scheduled to be closed for the event. City officials recommend traveling to the event via public transport, bike, or on foot. Extra security measures will be implemented and traffic disruptions should be expected (road closures, congestion).

In the event that Ajax wins the match on May 24, an official celebration is scheduled on the Musemplein on Thursday, May 25. The celebration, which would begin at 15:00 with Ajax players arriving at 18:00, would also draw a large crowd.

Context

On May 7, fans of the Dutch team Feyenoord rioted in Rotterdam after losing out on securing the Dutch league championship in a match against Ajax. Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the rioters.

Advice

Individuals are advised to plan for traffic disruptions and remain vigilant. While the event is expected to be peaceful, large sports crowds can turn unruly and violence is always possible.
