Turkey: Istanbul hosts major defense industry event May 9-12
Istanbul hosts the International Defense Industry Fair May 9-12; anticipate heightened security and transportation delays
Event
The 13th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) will be held in Istanbul from May 9 to 12 at the Tuyap Exhibition and Convention Center. Hosted by the Turkish Defense Ministry, nearly 800 companies from more than 50 countries will participate in the trade show, which will be attended by nearly 500 high-level foreign delegates (e.g., ministers, deputy ministers, chiefs of general staff, military commanders, and defense procurement officials) from 76 countries and international institutions.
Given the nature of the event and the number of high-ranking officials from various countries expected to be in attendance, heightened security measures should be anticipated in the area of the event space as well as the vicinity of hotels popular with foreign nationals. Transportation disruptions are likely and demonstrations are possible.
Context
IDEF has been held in Turkey every two years since 1993, hosting both private industry and government representatives. More than 2000 meetings and agreements between and amongst government and industry entities are anticipated to be made at this year’s event.
Advice
Individuals in Istanbul are advised to anticipate heightened security measures and transportation delays; avoid all demonstrations and/or protests as there is always the risk that they could escalate into violence. Due to the underlying terrorist threat, report any suspicious objects or behavior to the authorities.
