Cameroon: Surge in Islamist violence in north

Event

Authorities in Cameroon have reported an increase in violence in the north, allegedly attributed to the militant group Boko Haram. Suicide bombers attacked two border towns and a military base in Mora and Kolofata in early June, as part of a string of recent attacks in the border area. One soldier was reportedly killed in the attacks, and several wounded.

Further attacks are possible in the coming days.

Context

The Far North region of Cameroon, especially along the border with Nigeria, regularly experiences significant violence attributed to Boko Haram. While the group's main stronghold is in Nigeria, the group has been carrying out attacks in Cameroon since 2013.
