Chile: Red alert for Antofagasta due to torrential rains June 7

Antofagasta province on red alert June 7 for storms and heavy rainfall; flooding may occur

Warning

Event

Chile's meteorological service issued a "red" alert for the province of Antofagasta, as storms and torrential rains are expected to hit the northern region on Wednesday, June 7. Lesser yellow alerts have also been issued for the provinces of El Loa and Tocopilla. The risk of flooding cannot be ruled out; increased rates of traffic accidents and ground transportation disruptions are possible.

Advice

Individuals present in the above areas are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities (e.g. possible evacuation orders) and to monitor the situation via local media and weather reporting outlets. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
