China: Landslide in Sichuan province June 24; 100 feared buried

A June 24 landslide destroys 40 homes in Xinmo, Sichuan province; 100 people are feared to be buried and a rescue operation is underway

Multiple reports indicate some 40 homes were destroyed by a landslide in the village of Xinmo, Sichuan province, at around 06:00 (local time) on Saturday, June 24. According to local officials, the slide blocked a roughly 2 km (1.2 mi) stretch of river. Some 100 people are feared to be buried and a rescue operation is underway.

Context

Deadly landslides occur frequently in China. In October 2016, a deadly landslide hit China's Zhejiang province, killing 18 people and nine others were reported missing. Rain brought by Typhoon Megi caused about 400,000 cubic meters (141,258,667 cubic feet) of debris to tumble down the mountains of Sucun Village, Suichang county, on September 28, burying 20 houses.
