India: Maharashtra farmer protest suspended June 11

Farmers in the western state of Maharashtra temporarily halted a protest movement on Sunday, June 11, after the state government promised to address their demands, namely to waive all farm loans. However, if no concrete action is taken by July 25, Maharashtra farmers have vowed to resume protests.

Context

On June 1, farmers across Maharashtra launched an indefinite strike, with protesters preventing produce trucks from transporting fruits, vegetables, and milk to major cities. Food suppliers had warned that the strike could result in shortages and increased food prices.
