Mauritius: H1N1 virus kills four in one week

Four individuals have died of the H1N1 flu virus in Mauritius over the past week (as of Tuesday, June 6). A total of 48 cases of the disease have been reported since the beginning of the year. In response, the country's Ministry of Health has called on individuals to receive this year’s flu vaccination, which protects against the strain; free vaccinations are available. 

Context

H1N1, commonly known as "swine flu," is a contagious virus that can spread from human to human. Symptoms of the disease include a sudden onset of high fever, aching muscles, headache, and severe dizziness. Individuals most at risk include pregnant women, children, elderly persons, and people who are infected with HIV/AIDS.

Advice

All those currently present in Mauritius are advised to take basic hygienic measures to reduce their risk of contracting the flu (e.g. frequent hand washing, long clothing, insect repellent, and mosquito netting) and to consider the vaccination. People developing the above symptoms are advised to seek medical attention.
