Magnitude-6.3 earthquake occurs in Indian Ocean northeast of Rodrigues, Mauritius, at 23:19 Sept. 26; tsunami advisory rescinded.
A magnitude-6.3 earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean to the northeast of Mauritius' island of Rodrigues at around 23:19 Sept. 26. The epicenter was about 431 km (267 miles) northeast of Port Mathurin, Mauritius. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles). No appreciable shaking was likely felt on Rodrigues or other islands in the Indian Ocean, and there have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
The temblor initially prompted the Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS) to issue a bulletin cautioning that the earthquake "may be capable of generating a tsunami affecting the Indian Ocean region." A subsequent bulletin, superseding the earlier notice, asserted that "there is no [tsunami] threat to countries in the Indian Ocean."
Out of an abundance of caution, consider moving away from low-lying coastal areas until local authorities confirm that no local tsunami threat exists.
