6.9-magnitude offshore earthquake strikes near Chiapas (southwest) early on June 14; no tsunami warning issued, destruction possible

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale struck off the southwestern coast of Mexico early on the morning of Wednesday, June 14. The epicenter is located approximately 15 km (9 mi) from the coast of Chiapas state in the extreme southwest, near the border with Guatemala. No tsunami alert has been issued.
No reports of damages or casualties have emerged yet but given the magnitude of the earthquake significant destruction is possible.
