6.9-magnitude offshore earthquake strikes near Chiapas (southwest) early on June 14; no significant damage or injuries reported
Event
An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale struck off the Pacific coast of Mexico around 01:30 (local time) on Wednesday, June 14. The epicenter was located near Chiapas state in the extreme south, near the border with Guatemala.
No tsunami alert was issued. Shaking was felt throughout Chiapas state but no significant damage or casualties have been reported. Some moderate damage and landslides have been reported in neighboring Guatemala.
Context
Mexico is located in an active seismic zone. Earthquakes are relatively common but major damage and loss of life is rare.

Individuals in Chiapas state are advised to be prepared for aftershocks.
