Taiwan: Influenza outbreak continues after end of flu season

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Tuesday, June 6, that influenza outbreaks (of primarily the influenza A - H3N2 strain) in Taiwan had led to three related deaths out of 72,000 reported cases over the previous week alone, an increase of 2.3 percent over the week prior. This despite the fact that, historically, the flu season ends in Taiwan in late May.

Context

Influenza is a contagious virus that can spread from human to human. Symptoms include high fever, aching muscles, headache, and respiratory issues. Particularly vulnerable individuals include young children, the elderly, pregnant women, the obese, and individuals suffering from chronic diseases. A vaccine is available.
